What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda, a Sanskrit term meaning “science of life,” is the OG holistic healing system. It’s been doing its thing for over 5,000 years, born, raised and nurtured in India. The core idea? Health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body, and spirit.

But Ayurveda is more than just a one-time fixer-upper for when you’re feeling under the weather. Our scriptures and ancient Indian literature mention that Ayurveda has three major energy types, the doshas, that live in each one of us:

  • Pitta, the fiery dosha, is akin to a hot flame. It rules digestion and metabolism, embodying courage, strength, and enthusiasm. But, when imbalanced, pitta may lead to inflammation, skin issues, heartburn, and challenges with gall bladder and liver.
  • Kapha, the nurturing dosha, is like a protective force – cold, wet, and heavy. It ensures stability, structure, and moisture. Balanced Kapha brings elegance, endurance, and compassion, but imbalances may result in slow starts, pneumonia, poor appetite, congestion, and skin tags. We’ve all got some combination of vata, pitta, and kapha, but usually, one or two of them take the lead. Life happens, right? Stress, a questionable food choice, a weird weather day, or even a family squabble—all these things can throw our energy balance out of whack, showing up as not-so-great feelings or even health issues. That’s when Ayurveda comes in.
