My Story
Hello and welcome to my blog! I’m using this as a platform to share with you my journey towards embracing a more holistic and clean lifestyle enveloped in an age old tradition. I’m 30 years old, but my story really begins in the bustling streets of Mumbai, India, where I was born and raised.
Growing up, Ayurveda was a whispered background melody in my life. My mother and grandmother, staunch believers in its practices, often discussed the benefits of natural remedies and holistic living. It was their first move when faced with acne, a common cold, hair loss or graying (PS: My mum is almost 60 and hasn’t colored her hair even once). Even when grappling with complex issues like Hip Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) and chronic vertigo, where western medicine fell short, they turned to Ayurveda, relying on its natural healing approach to empower their bodies. Despite this, as a child and young adult, I was skeptical about the efficacy of its practice.
In 2015, I moved to the USA and left behind the Ayurveda stories and teachings that had passively shaped my upbringing. And as the saying goes: “ Out of sight, out of mind”. It was here that I faced one of my greatest personal challenges: Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). This condition affected my health and wellbeing, causing acute hormonal imbalance, irregular periods, fatigue, weight fluctuations, stress, and skin issues. I felt like it was gradually taking over every aspect of my life and getting worse year over year. My gynecologist recommended birth control to regulate my menstrual cycle and address some of the symptoms. However birth control brought its own set of nasty side effects. Besides, we all know that is NOT a permanent solution for PCOS.
Fast forward to 2022, my fiance popped the question! Ahhh! After the warmth of the excitement gradually faded, a subtle anxiety grew. I took a good look at myself and realized I wasn’t exactly the version of me I’d pictured for my big day. With the wedding just a year away, “How am I gonna look and feel my best with it approaching so quickly?”
I turned to the wisdom I had once disregarded – Ayurveda. Incorporating turmeric, ginger, amla, and ashwagandha into my daily routine, I was astounded by the positive changes in my skin, hair, energy, weight, and overall health. Those old family conversations finally made sense, resonating with my own experiences.
PS: I swear I’m 31!
If you’re curious, the wedding went great and I felt great. Now onto the next chapter – starting a family. Unfortunately, my PCOS is not just skin deep but also makes it harder for me to conceive.
Today, I’m faced with a decision that we’ve all considered. Do I go to a doctor for prescribed treatments I don’t understand with side effects that I may or may not get? Or do I try to change parts of my life to live in accordance with Ayurveda – like my family always has. There’s no one size fits all, but when it comes to my daily living, I am more committed than ever to unravel the secrets of Ayurveda that our ancestors so graciously left us with, and how it can help not just my life, but the lives of others. It’s not just about remedies and diets; it’s about rekindling a connection to my roots and embracing a holistic approach to health.
So whether you’ve got my set of problems or your own special mix, please join me as I dive deeper into what Ayurveda can mean for all of us.
